Cooling treatments are utilized typically in newborns who have a hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy injury. The basic theory in the medicine is that it slows some of the metabolism down and, in doing so, also either lessens or prevents the injury. I think what we’ve seen at our firm is that oftentimes a patient may have an MRI, and after cooling, the results of that MRI may show a lessened or less severe injury. But there are circumstances where some of those children, as they get older, can start to develop some cognitive deficits even though they had a somewhat normal MRI. So we think it’s important, even if the results of an MRI are normal after a baby has cooling, to make sure that you follow up with an attorney if you start to see problems with your child as they get older in life.
