The Telemetry unit in a hospital used to be called the stepdown unit, and what it is, is a heightened area of observation but not at the level of an ICU. So, if someone is on the Telemetry floor, they need heightened observation and nursing attention and a lower nurse-to-patient ratio than someone who is on a general floor in a hospital, but they’re not in a critical or an acute setting the way an intensive care unit patient is. So, if you hear someone is on Telemetry, that means someone should be paying extra attention to them.
