We have the honor of representing a 34-year-old woman who arrived at Plantation General Hospital for the birth of her child, and something went catastrophically wrong during that birth. The child was born with a condition called shoulder dystocia, which is a significant injury to her upper extremity, and through a lot of work and a lot of investigation, a lot of time and resources, we were able to understand what went wrong during the childbirth and what could have been done to prevent this injury to this child, who’s going to suffer significant permanent injury for the rest of their life. In terms of making sure that we were able to hold the right people accountable, our investigation revealed those people at the hospital and the healthcare providers that were responsible for causing this injury to this child and hold those people accountable, whether they are part of the hospital or outside medical physicians, those people who had a role in causing the injury to this child. We were able to hold them responsible, and we’re very proud of the work that we did. Nothing’s going to take away the injury that this child suffered, but what we were able to do is provide a measure of compensation to them so that the child can have the resources available, the resources necessary to provide them a comfortable life and address the injury that they’re going to have for the rest of their life.
