IVC Filters

An Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) is a small filtering device that is placed within the IVC, which is a large vein in the abdomen that returns blood from the lower half of the body to the heart. It is possible for blood clots to occasionally travel to the lungs where they may cause a pulmonary embolism or blockage.

It is claimed that IVC filters help reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism by catching large clots and preventing them from reaching the heart and lungs.

IVC filters are usually placed with minimally invasive procedures using a catheter ( a long, thin, hollow plastic tube). Patients are positioned on their back and given sedation. The catheter is inserted in the leg or other area of the body and used to place the IVC filter in position. The procedure usually takes less than an hour.
