Filing a Medical Malpractice Lawsuit Against a Bethesda Hospital in Florida

Baptist Health South Florida is a nonprofit faith-based health network operating 11 hospitals in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties, including the following two Bethesda Hospitals:

Bethesda Hospital East: Located at 2815 S Seacrest Blvd, Boynton Beach, FL 33435, it offers comprehensive orthopedic, women’s and children’s, cancer, and other services.

Bethesda Hospital West: Located at 9655 Boynton Beach Blvd, Boynton Beach, FL 33472, it offers emergency care, advanced cardiac care, and comprehensive care services.

Doctors and hospitals are not legally responsible for all adverse patient outcomes. However, under Florida law, patients have the right to sue for medical malpractice and seek compensation for their damages when their treatment amounts to medical negligence.

You must generally file your lawsuit within Florida’s two-year malpractice statute of limitations. While there are some limited exceptions to the statute of limitations, the best course of action is to consult an attorney to determine the specific deadlines associated with your claim.

FHVG Case Study: Failure to Properly Interpret EKG Leads to Loss of Life

In one case, we represented the family of a 71-year-old man who arrived at Bethesda Hospital after sustaining a fall at home. He was diagnosed in the Emergency Room with a broken right arm that required surgery to repair. Despite suffering from shortness of breath, a drop in heart rate, and reduced oxygen saturation levels, the medical staff “cleared” the man for the surgical procedure. The health care providers also failed to properly interpret a critical EKG done before the elective surgery.

As our client’s loved one was being transferred from the operating room table to a bed, his vital signs indicated the immediate need for CPR. Unfortunately, the staff was not able to revive him, and he died. In this case, medical providers ignored the symptoms presented by the patient and sent him for surgery. The inadequate communication between health care providers regarding the patient’s symptomatology resulted in death.

In another case, we handled separate claims against Bethesda Hospital involving the husband of a client, who was given powerful narcotics without proper monitoring, which led to his death. In the case against the hospital, Bethesda admitted liability. The case went to voluntary binding arbitration and settled for a significant sum. In a separate case, we went to trial against the physician and his employer, a prominent physician staffing company, resulting in a $20.2 million verdict.

The lawyers at FHVG have had numerous cases against Bethesda and the Baptist Health System.  In one such case, we represented the family of a mother who died after giving birth to her newborn child. The hospital and physicians failed to diagnose a hypertensive crisis after delivery.

According to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, there have been 43 payments to victims of malpractice at Bethesda Hospital who died as a result of the care they received
